Un mondo di metamorfosi fra uomo e natura
La mostra personale, Kusterle. I segni della metembiosi, assume per l’Associazione Culturale “Venti d’arte” connotati di straordinario valore, poiché presenta un artista apprezzato a livello internazionale. La sua realizzazione è stata possibile grazie alla collaborazione e alla sensibilità di numerose Istituzioni pubbliche e private, nonché all’impegno di singole persone che hanno creduto in essa.
I lavori di Roberto Kusterle sono esposti presso la Galleria Regionale d’Arte Contemporanea “Luigi Spazzapan” di Gradisca d’Isonzo (Gorizia) e al Museo Civico del Territorio del Comune di Cormòns (Gorizia), realtà isontine da sempre attente alla valorizzazione dei grandi Maestri del Novecento, ma anche interessate alla promozione di giovani artisti della nostra Regione.
La serie di opere realizzate da Kusterle, sostenuta dall’Associazione fin dalle sue prime fasi, ha trovato una fonte d’ispirazione nel patrimonio faunistico del Museo Friulano di Storia Naturale di Udine e nell’Ufficio gestione faunistico-venatoria e risorse naturali della Provincia di Gorizia.
Da sempre sedotto e affascinato dal rapporto tra il corpo umano e la natura, in tutte le sue varie sfaccettature, Kusterle ha preso spunto da soggetti del regno animale, che ha interiorizzato da un punto di vista concettuale ed elaborato attraverso la scelta di modelli umani sapientemente truccati e messi in posa. Ha realizzato, tra il 2012 ed il 2013, trentasette opere di stupefacente forza visiva; alcune di esse – Punto d’osservazione (2012), Il ramo del canto (2012), Crescita (2012), Matrimonio sacro 1 e 2 (2012), La carezza di Bruges (2012) – sono state già esposte in mostre personali e collettive a Parigi, Bruxelles, Lubiana, Roma e Venezia, sebbene la serie non sia mai stata presentata in modo esaustivo e non sia stato pubblicato, fino ad ora, un catalogo che ne analizzi approfonditamente le singole opere.
Nelle immagini appartenenti alla serie I segni della metembiosi, l’autore illustra una sorta di metamorfosi, migrazione e trasmigrazione dall’uomo all’animale, ove quest’ultimo svolge un ruolo preminente. I corpi sono lacerati, quasi sventrati e rivelano un intreccio di fuscelli e sterpi, che assumono le sembianze di bestie impagliate. La natura si manifesta, quasi nella sua espressione primordiale, in mammiferi e uccelli che, innestandosi su un latente, inerte e remissivo corpo umano, gli conferiscono una nuova vitalità antropomorfica.
Le creazioni di Roberto Kusterle possono anche essere intese come una forma di “reciprocità diretta”, principio tratto dal gioco denominato “dilemma del prigioniero” e interpretato in chiave evolutiva da Robert Trivers: le due entità (uomo e animale) sono indissolubilmente legate in un ambiguo tentativo di prevaricazione dell’uno sull’altro.
Non solo, queste due entità sembrano attuare ciò che si definisce una rottura di simmetria, originariamente illustrata dal premio Nobel Philip Warren Anderson, in un articolo intitolato More is different, apparso su Science nel 1972. Questo processo non è spiegabile in termini deterministici, esprimendo così una potenzialità e una libertà della natura che emergono anche dai lavori di Kusterle.
Egli utilizza come mezzo espressivo lo strumento della fotografia. La ripresa di elementi naturali, di materiali sapientemente costruiti e di modelli, può tuttavia considerarsi solo l’incipit di un lungo processo creativo, attraverso un “viaggio mentale” che lui stesso definisce “tormento creativo”. Le immagini prendono forma, rivelando i pensieri più intimi e profondi del mondo dell’artista. La stampa, allora, è solo l’atto finale di un percorso: immortalare su carta fotografica un’idea.
Categorizzare Kusterle come fotografo quindi è una definizione riduttiva, poiché l’artista utilizza questa tecnica solamente come mero mezzo espressivo.
Nell’ottica della diffusione e della valorizzazione delle eccellenze artistiche contemporanee presenti sul territorio, l’Associazione Culturale “Venti d’arte” ha voluto proporre un artista di respiro mitteleuropeo, paradossalmente più apprezzato oltre i confini regionali che a livello locale.
È un piacere quindi ringraziare il Comune di Cormòns e la Galleria Regionale d’Arte Contemporanea “Luigi Spazzapan” che hanno sostenuto con forza questa manifestazione, il cui scopo è sensibilizzare il pubblico alla visione dell’arte contemporanea e, nel contempo, riconoscere l’importante excursus artistico di Kusterle.

The Metamorphosis of Man and Nature
It is a great honour for the Associazione Culturale “Venti d’arte” to present Kusterle. The Marks of Metembiosis, a solo shows highlighting the work of the internationally renowned artist Roberto Kusterle. This has been made possible thanks to the collaboration and enthusiasm of numerous public and private institutions as well as the commitment and hard work of all the individuals determined to make this project a reality.
Roberto Kusterle’s work are being shown at the Galleria Regionale d’Arte Contemporanea “Luigi Spazzapan” in Gradisca d’Isonzo (Gorizia) and at the Museo Civico del Territorio del Comune di Cormòns (Gorizia), local institutions which have always been committed to highlighting the great artists of the twentieth century as well as promoting young artists from the local area.
The works created by Kusterle, who was supported by the Association right from the earliest stages, have been inspired by the wildlife collection of the Museum of Natural History in Udine and the Department for Wildlife, Hunting and Natural Resources in the Provincia di Gorizia.
Kusterle has always been intrigued and fascinated by the multi-faceted relationship between the human body and nature. Here he has drawn inspiration from the animal world, which he has internalised in conceptual terms and elaborated through cleverly painted and posed human models. Between 2012 and 2013 he created thirty seven artworks, each one with a powerfully arresting visual impact. Some of them – Vantage Point (2012), Song Branch (2012), Growth (2012), Sacred Wedding 1 and 2 (2012), Bruges’ Caress (2012) – have already been shown in solo shows or group exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, Ljubljana, Rome and Venice, although the complete series has never been show in its entirety and so far there has been no published catalogue which examines each photograph in detail.
In the images in the series The Marks of Metembiosis, Kusterle illustrates a kind of metamorphosis, migration and transmigration from man to animal, where the latter plays the primary role. The bodies are lacerated, almost eviscerated, they reveal a tangle of twigs and branches, and take on the appearance of stuffed animals. Nature manifests itself in an almost primordial way, through mammals and birds which graft themselves onto a latent, inert and submissive human bodies, giving them a new anthropomorphic vitality.
Kusterle’s artworks can also be understood as a kind of “direct reciprocation”, a principle derived from a game know as “the prisoner’s dilemma” and interpreted in a sophisticated way by Robert Trivers: the two beings (man and animal) are both inseparably bound in an ambiguous attempt to dominate the other.
Furthermore, these two beings seem to operate that which is know as symmetry breaking, originally illustrated by the Nobel prize winner Philip Warren Anderson in an article titled More is different, published in Science in 1972. This process cannot be defined in deterministic terms, thus expressing a potential and a freedom of nature which can also be perceived in Kusterle’s works.
He uses photography as his means of expression. The photography of natural elements, of skilfully built and modelled materials is, in actual fact, only a tiny part of a long creative process. Through a “journey of the mind”, which the artist himself calls “a creative torment”, the images take form, revealing the deepest and most intimate thoughts of the artist. The printing is simply the final act of a much larger process: immortalising an idea on photographic paper.
However, to categorise Kusterle as a photographer is far too simplistic a definition, since the artist makes use of the medium simply as a means of expression.
With the aim of promoting and supporting the very best of local contemporary art, the Associazione Culturale “Venti d’arte” was keen to turn the spotlight on an artist with a mittel-european perspective, paradoxically better known outside the region than he is at home.
We are therefore delighted to thank the Comune di Cormòns and the Galleria Regionale d’Arte Contemporanea “Luigi Spazzapan” for their unwavering support of this initiative, which seeks to broaden the public appreciation of contemporary art and at the same time pay tribute to the great artistic talent of Roberto Kusterle.
